The Alan Turing Memorial stands in Sackville Gardens, immediately beside Manchester’s Gay Village.
Unveiled in 2001, the bronze statue commemorates mathematician and codebreaker Alan Turing, whose work played a crucial role during the Second World War. Turing was prosecuted in 1952 for homosexual acts and was subjected to hormonal treatment before his death in 1954.
Its location between the Gay Village and the former University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology is particularly fitting, reflecting both Turing’s scientific legacy and his importance to LGBTQ+ history.
